Rob Rutenbar, Pitt’s senior vice chancellor for research, and William Federspiel, John A. Swanson Professor of Bioengineering, were recently named fellows for the National Academy of Inventors’ 2019 fellowship class.

The NAI Fellows Program highlights academic inventors who have demonstrated a spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society. Election to fellow is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.

Rutenbar and Federspiel have a combined 26 patents to their names, and have over 300 peer-reviewed journals and papers published.
